Gaming platform announces an ambitious plan to expand age estimation, limiting communication between unknown adults and minors.
The Most Ambitious Safety Plan by Roblox
Roblox has just announced a major plan to expand age estimation for all users who use communication features on the platform by the end of this year.
The goal is clear: to ensure that all interactions and content are appropriate for each player’s age.
How Roblox Will Do It:
- Combined Technology: A combination of facial age estimation technology, ID-based age verification, and verified parental consent will be used.
- High Accuracy: This process will provide a much more accurate measure of age than simply relying on the birthdate entered by the user.
With this information, Roblox will introduce new systems to limit communication between adults and minors unless they know each other in real life.
A New Standard for Digital Safety
Roblox hopes this measure will become a standard adopted by other gaming platforms, social media, and communication services, regardless of future legal requirements.
- Age-Appropriate Development: New layers of protection will ensure that users only access features and content suitable for their developmental stage.
Initiatives Launched in 2025
The expansion of age estimation builds on more than 100 safety initiatives implemented since January 2025:
- Roblox Sentinel: A new open-source AI system designed to detect early signs of risks to child safety.
- Age-Based Communication: Tools such as Trusted Connections and improvements to voice and text filters.
- Enhanced Moderation: New technologies to detect and shut down servers where a high number of users are violating the rules.
- New Experience Guidelines: The age limit for restricted experiences has been raised from 17 to 18, along with restrictions on social environments that depict private spaces.
Roblox’s commitment is to maintain a platform where users of all ages can explore, create, and share in ways that are appropriate for their development.
